Getting here

If you're travelling by car there are three routes to choose from:

  • Lymington to Yarmouth - WightLink
  • Southampton to East Cowes - Red Funnel
  • Portsmouth to Fishbourne - WightLink

Foot passengers have some additional options:

  • Southampton to Cowes - RedJet
  • Portsmouth to Ryde - WightLink Cat
  • Southsea to Ryde - Hovercraft

The easiest way to book tickets is via the operators websites:

WightLink www.wightlink.co.uk
Red Funnel www.redfunnel.co.uk
Hover Travel www.hovertravel.co.uk

The nearest ferry port to the Moth house is Fishbourne.  The nearest foot passenger port is Ryde.

Crossing the solent in bad weather

As an offshore Island it does sometimes happen that crossings get cancelled due to very poor weather conditions. The Hovercraft is the most vulnerable to adverse weather and is the first to cancel flights as the hovercraft is not safe to use in very rough and windy weather.

If we get a bad storm the catamarans are next to cancel sailings but the ferries generally carry on unless things get very bad!  The Lymington to Yarmouth ferry is the most vulnerable of the ferry routes as there is less shelter on the west side of the Solent and the prevailing weather is generally from the Atlantic.

Being cut off from the mainland is a rare event, and generally crossings are restored within a few hours.  If you have any concerns about adverse weather it's best to check with the operators websites (links above) which they keep updated with the live operating status.
